Some Places To See In The Area

Domme and the Surrounding Area

Perched on the heights of a cliff, Domme is a classic bastide town with fortified gateways and walls. Classified as one of Most Beautiful Villages of France, within the town there is an underground network of caves, shops and fine restaurants, and exceptional panoramic views over the Dordogne.

Sarlat

Regarded as the capital of the Perigord Noir and just a few kilometres north of the Dordogne river, this is a fabulous example of a well preserved medieval town, with its warren of narrow streets, hidden courtyards, many shops and restaurants, and a variety of street entertainers. It's not hard to see why Sarlat has featured in many American and French movies.

Beynac

Sandwiched between the Dordogne river and the steep-sided cliffs this is also listed amongst the "Plus Beaux Villages de France" and is overlooked by the Chateau de Beynac towering above the town. The town and Chateau together offer one of the finest views in France.

La Roque Gageac

A regular winner of France's prettiest village contest, La Roque Gageac shelters under dramatically overhanging cliffs. It has a troglodyte fort and a jumble of characteristic properties built into the sandstone cliffs.

Les Eyzies and the Vézère Valley

This area contains some of the greatest prehistoric sites in Europe, particularly the caves at Lascaux near Montignac.

There are many chateaux along the Dordogne Valley, all very different and all worth a visit. Among them and within a short drive are, Marqueyssac, Castelnaud, Montfort and Milandes.

Other places most definitely worth a visit and within an hour's drive are:

- Rocamadour
- Monpazier
- Gouffre de Padirac
- St Cirq-Lapopie
